My work focuses on the feeling of landscape—inner and outer—combining the perceptions gathered both through direct observation and through sensations that glimmer at the edge of conscious thought and vision.

My canvases often juxtapose wide expanses of color against active, delicate brushwork. The paintings consist of a series of layers varying in texture and transparency. By scraping, pouring, glazing and blotting, I strive for an interplay between the layers, allowing greater or lesser glimpses of what lies beneath. Generally, a grid element is buried and brought back to varying degrees, echoing the lines within. I do this as a means of bringing tension and order to the canvas—a bone structure of sorts.

Abstract expressionism, minimalism, Japanese and Chinese landscape painting and calligraphy are strong influences on my painting as are the line, shape, color and form that I “collect” while working with watercolor outdoors.
